Platypus

This lil fellow is Platypus. He is the protagonist of the film facing unicorns, slime, golems, and dragons to join the Legends Guild. Is he courageous or just dumb? Probably the latter. Some may speculate on how many braincells he has...the answer is canonically two and half. Two control his legs and the other half powers everything else. There is no thought in his head nor is there a soul behind those eyes. But what he lacks in brainpower he makes up for in spirit. His one-track mind won't allow him to give up on his goals no matter how rocky the journey may be.

"The Platypus was initially created as a doodle at the side of my notes, eventually being refined into the form present in the film. It was important to the film to push the derpy face and silly proportions to make his personality come across without a word being spoken. He uses a tertiary color scheme of blue, orange, and pink to show his childish and fun personality. He truly is our sweet little boy." - Liz Rivera

Croc

Guild Master

Eagle

Outside the guild stands two guards. This dude is Croc, also known as bully number one. When Platypus tries to join the guild, Croc gets the idea to send the lil runt on an impossible mission. Is this attempted murder?

Fun Fact: His language is akin to Neanderthal-like grunts and contrary to popular belief, his speech is unintelligible even in universe. Eagle only pretends to understand him and any attempt to translate him is incorrect.

As the legend goes, this owl founded the Legends Guild many years ago. Back then, he could be described as a fearless leader; he was buff and at peak physique. However, as time went on and the guild grew larger, he's been reduced to a dude filling out paperwork. Unfortunately, the passage of time didn't treat him too kindly, for his once swole bod became scrawny and frail. Now, he's a shell of a man left longing to return to the good 'ol days

Eagle, or bully number two, is the second guard. He is stoic and unemotive. Similar to Croc, he both pretends to speak and vocalizes his nods. He also enables Croc's bullying and is an accomplice to the attempted murder.

Will either of them face their comeuppance?

"When designing the two guild bullies, my first idea was the crocodile. Being the most threatening species on land, it made sense. Before settling on the Eagle, he was originally going to be a skinny tall chicken or a big strong koala. Until realizing that the Eagle was a perfect fit for a guild member that has courage and determination with his personality." - Rogan Bowman

Unicorn_01.png

Unicorn

Most unicorns are elegant, pretty, and majestic...but not this guy. He's not like other unicorns. Trying his best to appear edgy and enhance his tough guy persona, he dawns a mohawk and a nose ring. He's going through his bad boy phase and there's nothing you could do about it.

"I had some misunderstandings when I got this character, I thought I needed to design an "evil unicorn". So I tried to make him look cooler and creepier, but in our story, the unicorn is supposed to be a less intelligent "bad boy". So in my later design, I focused on his hairstyle. He doesn't have beautiful drifting long hair like ordinary unicorns, but a handsome mohawk. Also, his eyes need to be more contemptuous, because he has some ego. I also added his unique "bad boy" signature, which is his nose ring."

Slime.

Slime

"The slime was fairly easy to design. Based on the concept we had for the film, the producer and team wanted to make the monsters simple to draw with basic shapes. I saw references for slimes in other media, such as video games and images from the internet of slime designs. What I came up with was a simple and round slime design that fits both my and the Platypus Quest style." - Max Ogunbunmi

Golem_01.png

Golem

This tough brute is the Golem. Situated right outside the dragon's lair, he serves as one of the obstacles Platypus faces. Some wonder how he came to be the dragon's bodyguard. So do we. Very few foolish travelers who have sought to slay the purple beast would make it passed the Golem. He is determined to protect her at all costs. Everyday he stands outside the dragon's door longing for his senpai to notice him. If only he weren't too shy nor too afraid to talk her. Will he profess his undying love?

"When coming up with what that Guardian would look like, I envisioned them to appear mysterious but menacing as well. I worked on some versions that kept the tough appearance mainly with their hands being giant stompers to stomp the Platypus on his quest. My favorite part was designing his face and body with them having only one hollow eye to give off the silent but strong type I was going for and making them seem slightly constructed in a sense with the patterns on his torso." - Debrina Rolley

Dragon_01.png

Dragon

Lastly, we have our magnificent dragon. She is quite the hot-tempered, vain, and dramatic type who loves to showoff and respects a fair fight. She resides in a large ominous tower set atop a hill with a massive hole in the roof that allows her to fly in and out with ease. She also enjoys setting it on fire for the aesthetic.

But she's angry.

She keeps getting misgendered even by the animation crew. How dare they. Not only that, but every visitor she's had came with the intent of killing her leading to her distrust of guests. Understandably, she believes they all share the same motives. Luckily for her, however, she's never lost a fight and would frequently come out on top with a nice barbeque.

But beneath her threatening exterior, she is just a lonely soul who only wants a friend.

"The Dragon was the one monster that already had concept art when we started production. Liz had thought of her as a mix between a Western and Eastern dragon with a long fire mane. I spent a lot of time playing with the shape language of the dragon as well as with different proportions. Additionally, I was going back and forth on what was best for the design with Liz. We also spent a long time making the face shape perfect; I made at least 30 versions of the jaw before we got to what it is now." - Ray White
